WHAT'S AN EXPANSION JOINT ?

Broad based buildings are designed  as independent blocks to prevent the damages that may occur in  the building structure due to expansions , contractions or ground settlements. The gaps between those blocks are called “Dilatation ” or “ Expansion Joint ”.

AT WHICH TYPE OF BUILDINGS EXPANSION JOINT MUST THE KEPT?

At the floors and walls of broad based buildings such as; shopping malls, hotels, business centers, factories, stadiums, hyper markets depending on the type of the soil and weight of the building expansion joints must be kept in every 20 - 30 meters.

At very high buildings , expansion joints must be kept between the high and low blocks. The places and widths of expansion joints must be determined by the structural engineer  by considering the horizontal and vertical movements of the buildings.

THE DAMAGES , THAT MAY BE FACED IF THE EXPANSION JOINT PROFILE IS NOT USED , INSTALLED IN THE WRONG WAY OR WRONG PROFILE CHOSEN:

The cracks on the floors, walls & ceilings , deformation in the profile , insulation problems and damages at fixation points will occur. Resolving those damages and applying the right profile will be an additional waste of time and money.

Hence as well as choosing the right profile and installation material,  installing the profile with an experienced installation team is critically important.

Technical Information

Asteknik floor , wall and ceiling profiles are manufactured according to DIN norms  in conformity with static and resistance calculations and resist to pressure and  friction.

“Heavy duty profiles” for truck and/or forklift crossing areas,  “watertight profiles” for the areas with water leakage risk and “seismic profiles” with high movement capability for earthquake zones exist in Asteknik's standard product range.

The profile seals are manufactured of EPDM or TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer ) at different colors. Profiles can be manufactured from 10 mm up to 400 mm. All profiles have corner types and most of them have floor & wall twain.

How to select the right profile?

Selecting the right profile is the most important point and may cause lots of problems if not done properly.

Clarifying the topics listed below will lead you to the right  profile.

1- JOINT OPENING – GAP ( Fb)
The gap between 2 building blocks must definitely be known.

2 – APPLICATION METHOD & LOCATION

It should be known whether the profile will be applied surface or flush mounted.
Flush mounted type should be preferred if the surface coating hasn't been done while the surface mounted type must be used for the completed coating.

    a) Flush Mounted Application

 Floor to Wall            Floor

    b) Surface Mounted Application

 Floor to Wall          Floor

As some profiles may be improper for outdoor application, location of use must be defined.

3 – COATING THICKNESS ( H )

For flush mounted applications, to define the profile height, coating thickness must be known.

4 – LOAD BEARING CAPACITY

For floor profiles, the load passing over (pedestrian, car, truck, forklift etc.) must be known.
For trucks and forklifts, their maximum payload should be defined.
The type of wheel (pneumatic, polyamide etc.) is an important detail for forklifts and reach trucks.

5 – MOVEMENT ABILITY

Horizontal and vertical movement abilities needed between 2 building blocks must be specified by the structural engineer depending on the height, type, load and ground of the building.
If exist, estimated lateral shear movement ability must be informed.

6 – ADDITIONAL FACTORS

At the places with water leakage risk, watertight profiles or waterproof membrane shall be used.
In the zones with high earthquake risk, seismic profiles shall be preferred.
To ensure fire resistance, profiles shall be applied with Asteknik's fire barrier systems.
If the profile will be exposed to any chemical attack, before placing an order type of the chemical shall be specified to choose the right type of profile & gasket.
